Publish Date: 2003-09-01
Features: This book is divided into six parts:
Part 1 consists of three papers on the relationship between anti-corruption and human rights protection: Professor Errol Mendes examines, through case studies worldwide, how corruption threatens both the fundamental civil and political rights of people globally and the economic and social rights of those in less developed countries. Part 2 focuses on the relationship between freedom of expression and social development: Professor Gong Rengren analyzes, using specific historical examples from China, the impact of restricting and depriving freedom of expression on social development, discussing its intrinsic value and social functions. The author argues that freedom of expression is a prerequisite for maintaining human dignity and healthy social progress, and that the protection of freedom of speech in practice still relies on legal systems. Part 3 includes two papers that critique the violations of personal freedom in China's labor re-education system. Part 4 features papers on the relationship between private property rights and human freedom. Part 5 consists of five papers on women's and children's rights, where the author analyzes, from perspectives such as international law, international politics, and domestic law, issues like legal accountability for acts of violence against women, the impact of the market economy and globalization on women, gender politics and civil society, the implementation of children's rights, and children's right to birth registration. Part 6 includes two papers that analyze, from a macro perspective, the theory and practice of China and Canada in implementing international human rights treaties domestically.
