The time span spans over 4,000 years. This book is a monumental work in the field of the history of Chinese economic thought. Traditional Chinese economic thought is the economic thought inherent to the Chinese nation. It grew in a unique social and historical environment in China, with little or no influence from external economic thought. Chinese culture is not an enclosed culture. China's exchanges of economy and culture with regions outside its borders had been carried out to a certain extent before the unification by the Qin Dynasty. Certain external cultures that entered China had a significant impact on Chinese culture and many aspects of Chinese society. A Comprehensive History of Chinese Economic Thought has two meanings of "comprehensive": one is the continuity in time, and the other is the thoroughness in the content of thought. The requirement for "comprehensive" includes both aspects, with greater emphasis on the latter.
