Publish Date: 1998-11-01
Features: During his lifetime, Hu Shi had planned to compile and publish his commentaries and political essays, and had manually drafted a catalog titled A Collection of Hu Shi's Current Affairs Commentaries in the 1930s (included in Volume 12 of Hu Shi's Unpublished Manuscripts and Secret Correspondence). Some of the commentaries and political essays Hu Shi published were separately collected in works such as Hu Shi's Collected Essays, The Human Rights Debate, The Independent Essays, Hu Shi's Commentaries, and We Must Choose Our Direction. This book includes Hu Shi's commentaries, political essays, and various miscellaneous writings, spanning from 1918 to 1960, with the articles arranged in chronological order. Articles already included in Hu Shi's Collected Essays, The Human Rights Debate, and Hu Shi's Speeches are not repeated in this volume. This is a newly compiled Collected Academic Writings Outside of Hu Shi's Collected Essays, featuring academic papers and book reviews/notes by Hu Shi that were not included in Hu Shi's Collected Essays or other standalone works. During his lifetime, Hu Shi only compiled his major academic writings before 1935 into Hu Shi's Collected Essays, and no subsequent academic articles were compiled into a collection. After Hu Shi's death, his unpublished writings were organized into Hu Shi's Unpublished Manuscripts and Hu Shi's Unpublished Manuscripts and Secret Correspondence. This volume selects the finest of Hu Shi's previously published academic writings or unpublished manuscripts to compile into Collected Academic Writings Outside of Hu Shi's Collected Essays. Suitable for readers with a high school education or higher.
This volume includes autobiographical works reflecting Hu Shi's life journey and academic career: Forty Autobiographical Sketches, My Faith, and Hu Shi's Autobiography in His Own Words. It also includes A Short History of the New Chinese Literary Movement, which reflects the origins and development of Hu Shi's campaign for "literary revolution." At the end of the book, there is a postscript on Hu Shi.
