During the 20th century, the industrial civilization built by humanity reached unprecedented heights, and the creation of human knowledge and the development of science and technology achieved remarkable accomplishments. This not only elevated humanity's understanding of the material world and itself to new levels but also transformed the face of the Earth. From the birth of the first airplane in 1902 to the successful realization of humanity's long-cherished dream of "going to the moon" with the U.S. Apollo moon landing program in 1969; from listening to distant voices through radio to the development and widespread adoption of digital television and the internet; from the invention of penicillin to the birth of the cloned sheep "Dolly." Over the past century, humanity has advanced at an astonishing pace from the "electrical age" to the "electronic age," transitioning from an industrialized society to an information society.
Alongside these achievements, humanity has also faced significant setbacks and disasters in the course of historical development. From the 1906 San Francisco earthquake to the devastating Chinese Tangshan earthquake that remains vivid in memory to this day; from the sinking of the luxurious Titanic ocean liner after hitting an iceberg at the beginning of the century to the tragic demise of the Russian nuclear submarine Kursk at the end of the century; from the widespread economic crises that struck capitalist countries in 1929 to the Southeast Asian financial crisis at the end of the century; from the devastation of World Wars I and II, marked by widespread destruction, smoke-filled skies, and shattered homes, to the tense standoff and dark clouds of the Cold War between the East and West, to the global ecological destruction, drug proliferation, and the spread of AIDS at the end of the century—these have all become severe challenges faced by people worldwide. Despite the numerous calamities that have befallen humanity, people have consistently overcome difficulties with courage, defeated evil with justice, and emerged victorious against disasters through unprecedented unity.
This book also records how, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the Chinese people have achieved extraordinary unity and organization, surmounted countless obstacles, and transformed a period of tragic circumstances into one with a bright future, contributing their part to the development of human history. Through this vibrant tapestry of a century of change, we can see the deep-seated transformations hidden beneath the surface of human society. One of the most significant changes of the 20th century was the gradual replacement of traditional industries by the new information industry amid continuous digitalization. In some countries, the information industry has become the dominant sector, and e-commerce has flourished globally. From the "world becoming one" of the last century to the emerging "global village" of this century; from the formation of a globalized economy with market, production, and financial systems transcending national boundaries, it is evident that the world is moving toward integration.
If the themes of the early to mid-20th century were war and revolution, then from the late 20th century onward, the dominant tone has been peace and development. Although regional conflicts have occurred from time to time, peace and development have become an irresistible trend in human history.
