I. This "Broad Selection, Annotated and Critiqued of the Fu Literature Throughout Dynasties" is a large-scale anthology designed to help readers understand the development and creation of Chinese fu literature. Currently, it is the most comprehensive anthology of its kind. Fu literature is a more refined and exquisite part of Chinese literature, but for a long time, due to the inherent difficulty of fu works and literary concepts, this valuable cultural heritage has not received sufficient attention. Many literary histories only briefly mention Han fu, mostly with negative opinions, while largely ignoring fu literature from other eras, which is a pity. In the past decade or so, the situation has improved somewhat, with research on fu literature gaining interest, and many people developing an appreciation for the fu genre and works from different dynasties. To enable this heritage to be accepted and recognized by a broad readership and to promote the study of fu literature, we organized scholars to compile this anthology.
II. To accomplish the task and achieve the goal, this anthology strives to introduce as many fu writers and works from different periods as possible to the readers. Therefore, the selection of works is relatively broad, especially for fu writers and works before the Northern and Southern Dynasties, which, due to historical reasons, have been lost in large quantities. This anthology includes as many as possible. Works from the Tang Dynasty and later are preserved relatively well, and we have tried to select representative works with distinctive ideological and artistic features. Excellent parallel prose has also been included to some extent. We hope that through this anthology, readers will gain a clearer understanding of the historical development and creative aspects of fu literature.
III. This series consists of an introduction, preface, main text, and appendices.
IV. This series is divided into six volumes. Volume 2 includes fu works from the Pre-Qin and Han periods, totaling 79 pieces. Volumes 3 and 4 include fu works from the Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties, totaling 115 pieces. Volumes 5 and 6 include fu works from the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, totaling 154 pieces.
V. The selection and annotation work for this series began in October 1998. Under unified editorial principles, the specific responsibilities for each volume were handled by the chief editors of the respective volumes.
