New Words from the Forest of Language

Features: This book is compiled based on the marginal notes, interlinear annotations, fragmentary manuscripts, and letters of Mr. Wu Shichang, who intended to write a work titled "Luo Yin Shi Ci Hua" but unfortunately passed away before starting. It can be imagined that these valuable marginal notes, annotations, and drafts form the foundation of the "Ci Hua." They have now been organized and arranged into five volumes: Volume 1 focuses on Ci theory, covering discussions on the origins and development of Ci, the key principles of composing Ci, criteria for evaluating Ci, and reviews of some Ci commentaries and anthologies. Volumes 2 to 5 analyze the Ci poets and works of the Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, involving over 160-70 individuals and more than 600 works. The appendix includes some discussions on poetry. These texts were written in different periods, some marked in the margins or between lines, while others appear in scattered notes. Except for a few excerpts from letters or incomplete drafts, most were written spontaneously during reading—impromptu and spontaneous—whether engaging in theoretical debates, jesting, delving into the depths, critiquing contemporary customs, or making abrupt judgments without further explanation.
