Fragment: 1.1.2 Plastic Names and Codes
Plastics are typically divided into two major categories—thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics—based on their different physicochemical properties and the significant variations in their behavior when heated. Due to their substantial differences in properties, their naming methods and codes are also entirely distinct.
1.1.2.1 Thermoplastics
This category includes a wide variety of plastics with diverse performance characteristics. Even within the same type, differences in resin molecular weight or molecular weight distribution, or variations in additives, can lead to significant differences in physical, mechanical, processing, and usage properties. To improve or enhance certain properties of the original resin, new varieties with superior performance can be obtained through chemical or physical methods such as copolymerization, grafting, block copolymerization, blending, modification, and reinforcement. Different countries and enterprises have their own naming methods and brand names. However, major varieties still share the same names and codes, as shown in Table 1-1.
