Cultural Mosaic: The History of Immigration in Canada

Author: Wang Bing
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2003-03-01
Features: This book discusses the immigration history of Canada's 12 major ethnic groups from a multicultural perspective. Previous Canadian immigration histories often addressed the issue from the traditional European viewpoint, referring to immigrants from colonial countries as settlers and other later-arriving ethnic members as immigrants, which is clearly incorrect. In reality, apart from the indigenous peoples, everyone in Canada should be called immigrants. Additionally, the focus of this book is not on the so-called two founding nations—Britons and French—rather, it emphasizes the process of multicultural formation, with minority immigrant groups naturally being at the center. This book provides only a brief account of the immigration histories of the French and British, concentrating instead on the immigration histories of the Scots, the Irish, and the distinctive small group—the Anglo-Normans.
