The entire book can be roughly divided into three parts: Part I "Discussions and Arguments," which consists of sixteen essays on painting art. The second part "Biographies of Artists," which includes short biographies of painters from the late Tang Dynasty, the Five Dynasties period, to the early Song Dynasty. The third part "Remnants of Stories and Recent Matters," the former being stories about painting collected from ancient biographies, and the latter being the author's observations and records of anecdotes in the painting world at that time, in general.
