Study on Ancient Navigation in Kunlun and the South China Sea: Examination of the Ancient Kingdom of Sumatra

Author: (French) Fei Lang
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2002-12-01
Features: We have taken into consideration the need to preserve the original style of the translated work and the coherence of the translation while adapting to the reading habits of contemporary readers, in compliance with current translation name conventions. For this reissue, the editorial team has made necessary revisions to the original book:
1. Revised layout. The original book was mostly in traditional Chinese vertical printing with dense text and small font size, making it difficult to read. It has now been uniformly converted to simplified Chinese horizontal printing with modern punctuation and appropriately enlarged font size.
2. Some original books, such as Pelliot's Studies on the Two Roads of Western and Central India, only had old-style sentence breaks without punctuation. For this reissue, punctuation has been added sentence by sentence.
3. For foreign names and place names in the book that are followed by the original text, the editorial team has referred to the Handbook of English Transliteration of Names compiled by Xinhua News Agency and the Handbook of Transliteration of Foreign Place Names compiled by the Chinese Place Name Committee for reference. Names have been either revised or annotated as appropriate based on specific circumstances.
4. Some translations in the book have been slightly adjusted in accordance with a cautious principle, based on current conventions. For example, Ramayana has been renamed Ramaiana, "Dai" has been changed to "Dai ethnic group," and "Lan Cang River" has been changed to "Lancang River," and so on.
5. Some old editions had appendices with error correction lists prepared by experts. For this reissue, these have been compared one by one and corrections made in the main text to benefit readers.
6. Any printing errors that were discovered in the original text have been corrected.
