Features: Liu Zongyuan, styled Zihou, was an outstanding litterateur and renowned thinker of the Tang Dynasty in China. He was originally from Hedong and was known as Liu Hedong. He was once exiled to Liuzhou and is also called Liu Liuzhou. Born into a bureaucratic landlord family, he passed the imperial examination at the age of twenty-one and was awarded the title of Scholar of the Imperial Academy at the age of twenty-six. Later, he served as the Assistant Secretary of the Jixian Hall Academy and the Censor-in-Chief. In the twenty-first year of the Zhenyuan era, he joined Wang Shuwen's reformist group, which advocated political reforms, and was promoted to the position of Assistant Director of the Ministry of Rites. Soon after, the reform failed, and he was exiled as the Commandant of Yongzhou. Ten years later, he was transferred to the position of Magistrate of Liuzhou. Four years later, he died in Liuzhou at the age of forty-seven. The works collected in this book from other periods are hoped to benefit a broad readership. This is a newly annotated edition of the complete collection of Liu Zongyuan's prose and poetry, including forty-five volumes of the main collection, two volumes of the Collected Works, supplementary materials, as well as appendices such as biographical accounts, bibliographical notes, and prefaces. It provides a valuable version for reading and studying Liu Zongyuan's works.
