Publish Date: 1996-03-01
Features: In the 1950s, some materials related to the Sino-French War were compiled. Especially when the "Sino-French War" volume edited by the Chinese History Society was published in 1955, it provided very convenient conditions for the research of this topic. However, for a considerable period of time, the history of the Sino-French War, except for the deepening of research on some individual issues and the heated discussions on the evaluation of certain figures, did not show significant progress. This has always been a weak link in the study of modern Chinese history. During this period, some works on the Sino-French War were published abroad, but they were not widely known in China. It wasn't until the early 1980s that the study of the Sino-French War history became active. In 1983, Guangxi held a national academic conference commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Paper Bridge Battle. Following this, Fujian, Guangxi, Zhejiang, and Yunnan successively invited scholars from various regions to gather and discuss various issues related to the Sino-French War history. These conferences not only showcased new achievements in the domestic study of the Sino-French War history but also gave a strong boost to this research. The Sino-French War was not only related to the warring parties but also had certain international significance and impact: it directly involved Vietnam and was indirectly connected with the interests of countries such as Europe, America, Japan, and others. Based on these facts, this book will include materials from these countries.
