Features: A Treatise on Function Words, a specialized work explaining classical Chinese function words. The author, Yuan Renlin, styled Zhenqian, was a native of Sanyuan County, Shaanxi Province, during the Qing Dynasty. He was a (a type of scholar recommended for the imperial examination system) during the Yongzheng era. There is a brief account of his life and achievements in Volume 6, the Biographies section of the New Sanyuan County Gazetteer. The Treatise on Function Words contains a total of 143 words, divided into 51 entries. The book was completed in the 49th year of the Kangxi reign (1710), and was published and engraved by Wang Dexiu, a student of Yuan, in the 11th year of the Qianlong reign (1746). Later, it was included in the Xiyin Collection by Li Xiling of Sanyuan. Subsequently, there was a revised and annotated edition by Xiong Luosu of Fengcheng, who punctuated the original text, corrected several errors in the earlier version, and added annotations where Yuan had mistakenly explained the pronunciation of characters. This is now considered one of the better preserved versions.
