Features: Wang Jun, a contemporary linguist. Originally named Wang Yi, styled Shao Gong. Born on March 1, 1922, in Nantong City, Jiangsu Province. From 1939 to 1946, he studied under renowned linguists such as Luo Changpei, Wang Li, and Tang Lan at Southwest Associated University. From 1946 to 1948, he taught at the Institute of Liberal Arts and the Department of Linguistics at Sun Yat-sen University. In 1949, he returned to his hometown to serve as a Chinese language teacher at Nantong Normal School, Jiangsu. In 1950, he was transferred to the Institute of Linguistics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences as an assistant researcher and was promoted to associate researcher in 1955. From 1952 to 1954, he concurrently served as an associate professor at the Language Specialization Department of Peking University and the National University of Ethnic Minorities. In 1956, the Institute of Ethnic Minority Languages was established under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Wang Jun was assigned to it, becoming a member of the Academic Committee and an Academic Secretary in 1958. In 1962, the Institute of Ethnic Minority Languages merged with the Institute of Ethnic Studies, where he served as a member of the Academic Committee and a Deputy Academic Secretary. Currently, he is a researcher at the Institute of Ethnic Studies, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Director of the Ethnic Language Research Office, and the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Ethnic Languages. He has also been elected or appointed as: a council member and academic committee member of the Chinese Linguistic Society, an editorial board member of the Journal of Chinese Linguistics; a council member and deputy secretary-general of the Chinese Society for Ethnic Studies; the vice president and secretary-general of the Chinese Society for Ethnic Linguistics; a council member of the Chinese Society for Phonology; an advisor to the National Association of Chinese Language Teaching in Ethnic Colleges; an advisor to the National Association for Textbook Reform in Higher Education; a council member of the Beijing Linguistic Society; an advisor to the Chinese toponymic Commission; a council member of the Academic Committee of the Institute of Chinese Language at Huazhong University of Science and Technology; and the China Encyclopedia
