Features: This book is a national-level planning textbook for the 15th Five-Year Plan of general higher education. It covers the fundamental content of several core courses such as theoretical mechanics, mechanics of materials, and engineering fluid mechanics. It introduces the basic framework of the engineering mechanics curriculum and the modeling and analytical methods for mechanical problems in engineering, providing students with a brief overview of the modern mechanics discipline. The book is divided into 8 chapters. Chapter 1 Introduction, briefly introduces engineering mechanics and several mechanical models; Chapter 2 Simplification and Equilibrium of Force Systems, covers the fundamental principles of statics, equivalent force systems, equilibrium force systems, equilibrium equations, and centers of gravity; Chapter 3 Static Analysis, covers the internal forces and stresses of rods, trusses, and cables; Chapter 4 Elastic Statics, covers the concepts of stress and strain, the mechanical behavior of materials, and the basic deformation of rods; Chapter 5 Strength Failure and Strength Criteria, covers the allowable stress method and allowable load method for strength evaluation, as well as classical strength theories; Chapter 6 Kinematics, covers the description of the motion of particles, rigid bodies, and continuous media; Chapter 7 Dynamics, covers differential equations of motion, fundamental theorems of dynamics, fixed-axis rotation and plane motion of rigid bodies; Chapter 8 Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics, covers fluid statics, the concept of flow fields, the continuity equation, the momentum equation, and the Bernoulli equation. This book can be used as a textbook for engineering mechanics courses with fewer credits in higher education institutions, or as a reference book for teachers of basic mechanics for further studies. Chapters 1–7 require 40–44 hours, and Chapter 8 requires 6–10 hours. Chapters marked with an asterisk () and italicized content are optional for courses with fewer credits and may not be taught. This book was supported by the Key Science and Technology Project of the Ministry of Education (No. 02058).
