Explanation of the Scribner Log Rule
This volume table is the modified Scribner Log Rule of the United States, revised in July 1972.
1. Formula for calculating volumes in this table
The Scribner log volume calculation formula is based on the principle of cutting 1-inch thick boards from the small end of a log. The specific method involves drawing several 1-inch thick board strips on the small end of the log, each with a minimum width of 4 inches, and leaving a 1/4-inch saw kerf between the strips. The total width of all the strips is summed to calculate the number of square inches in the cross-section, which is then divided by 12 to determine the volume of a 1-foot long log in board feet (1 board foot = thickness 1 inch × width 1 foot × length 1 foot).
