Features: This book is a teaching material for the Introduction to Literary Theory course in Chinese departments of universities, and it belongs to the "Seventh Five-Year Plan" textbook project of the State Education Commission. The writing of this book is guided by Marxism. The entire book not only highlights the ideological nature of literature, literature as reflection, and the social nature of literature—key Marxist literary theory perspectives—but also attempts to explain various literary phenomena using dialectical materialism and historical materialism. At the same time, this book is both a textbook and a monograph. We believe that since the founding of the People's Republic of China, many editions of textbooks on literary theory have been published, and some of these have met the needs of teaching and achieved significant results. However, their appearances are largely similar. This book aims to innovate. As a textbook, it comprehensively and systematically introduces the views and knowledge of literary theory. The first part is the theoretical section, which consists of five chapters—Defining Literary Theory, The Nature of Literature, Literary Creation, The Composition of Literary Works, and Literary Reception—forming a complete structure of literary theory. The second part is the historical section, which concisely and succinctly describes the different developmental lines and distinctive morphological features of Chinese and Western literary theories in two chapters. The writing of this book is guided by Marxism and adopts a multi-perspective research method. To enrich the content and increase the information volume, each chapter provides necessary reviews of the views of various schools of literary theory that have formed in Chinese and foreign history.
