Features: Lu Xun, the great writer and outstanding scholar, has done extensive research and organization work on classical Chinese literature and historical texts. The ancient books he collated, compiled, and edited were published during his lifetime, including three works: Collected Records of the Ancient State of Kuaiji, Old Tales of Fiction, and Tang and Song Legends. In 1938, when compiling the Complete Works of Lu Xun, two additional works—The Collection of Ji Kang and The Deep Dredging of Ancient Fiction—were added. Later, in the supplementary volume of the Complete Works of Lu Xun published in 1952, A Compendium of Fiction was included.
In addition, there are several works that were never published, such as the Shi Cheng Shu Han and Ling Biao Lu Yi recorded in Lu Xun’s bibliography of translated works in San Xian Ji, as well as the recently discovered Shi Shen Shu Han, Yu Yu Jin Shu, Fan Zi Ji Ran, Wei Zi, Ren Zi, Yu Xi Zhi Lin, Zhang Yin Wen Shi Zhuan, The Records of Various Scholars, Shen Xiaoxian Collection, Yun Gu Zaji, and The Annotated Bai Yu Jing from Lu Xun’s posthumous manuscripts.
Lu Xun was a great writer and an outstanding scholar who made significant contributions to the development of modern Chinese literature and the organization of traditional Chinese culture throughout his life. His collection and organization of classical historical and literary works primarily took place in the years surrounding the Xinhai Revolution, becoming an important aspect of his early academic activities. From these works, one can see Lu Xun’s emphasis on and achievements in preserving and organizing China’s ancient cultural heritage. These works themselves are also important classics of Chinese literature and history.
Now, we have specially compiled these twenty works, both published and unpublished, into this Collected Ancient Books of Lu Xun, for readers to browse and reference. This collection is divided into four volumes. For works that were included in the Complete Works of Lu Xun, the print version of the Complete Works is used. For those never published, such as the Shi Cheng Shu Han, the manuscript is transcribed, with sentences punctuated and annotations added. Each work has been preliminarily collated based on the manuscript and the original references.
