Features: Bizarre urban life, mysterious religious deities, vanished crowds, rural life in memory, and the dazzling world of expatriates. This book will repeatedly present the works of British traveler R·F·Fitch (R·F·Fitch), whose extensive photographic scope and exquisite artistic craftsmanship are considered to have left behind precious materials for China. The Tongshanshe (Good Samaritan Society) established by the American missionary Walter Henry Medhurst is mentioned in this context. Medhurst was even praised by Gu Hongming as a "scholar of Chinese studies with profound expertise in the 19th century." He served as a missionary in the North China region while also "studying" Chinese culture. Some of the photographs included in this book were taken for articles he wrote.
Additionally, there was the Society of Friends (Quakers), which was sent by the British Church and had long chosen the southwestern provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guizhou as its missionary areas. The society also included American missionaries, such as the renowned American female missionary Alice Fitch. The Britishman, Horace H. Pott, was the long-term leader of the society.
As for the famous American missionary John Calvin McCants, who founded the Xiangxian Tang (Hall of Moral Education), he was particularly attentive to "folk customs and local conditions" because he advocated: "Confucius is like Jesus" and believed in "guiding the Chinese people with moral and religious teachings."
