Between 1856 and 1857, a novel serialized in the French Paris magazine caused a sensation in the literary world while also stirring a major uproar in society. Enraged judicial authorities prosecuted the author, accusing the novel of being "immoral and religious," and summoned the author to court. This author was Gustave Flaubert, and this novel was his masterpiece, Madame Bovary. The farce of the trial ultimately ended with an "acquittal," yet the reclusive, obscure author thus established his literary reputation and his place in literary history.
