Features: Ecology at Yunnan University has always been one of the strongest ecology programs in China, especially in the field of plant ecology. The textbook Plant Ecology written in the 1980s played a very important role in Chinese ecology education. Now, the new Plant Ecology textbook has been successfully launched. I believe this is a high-quality and up-to-date version, and I hope it will be published as soon as possible. I think it would be great to discuss spatial and temporal scales in the introduction or before diving into the layers of ecology, as past textbooks did not do this. (Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor at Beijing Normal University, Sun Ruyong)
The Plant Ecology textbook previously compiled by Yunnan University was one of the reference books for my PhD applicants for a long time. The new Plant Ecology textbook has added many new contents, reflecting the spirit of the times and keeping pace with progress, which will be a contribution to Chinese ecology. (Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Researcher at the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Li Wenhua)
The publication of the Plant Ecology textbook will be an important event in the development of Chinese ecology textbooks and a major leap in the process of Plant Ecology textbook development. Analyzing from ecosystems to individuals, it differs from previous textbooks that followed the individual-to-ecosystem structure, representing a bold attempt. The book is scientific, rigorous, vivid, and original, making it an invaluable textbook for plant ecology teaching. (Professor of Ecology at Shandong University, Wang Renqing)
The Plant Ecology textbook is a newly compiled version based on the same-named textbook led by the late renowned Chinese ecologist, Professor Qu Zhongxiang of Yunnan University, integrating innovative content systems in line with the development level of modern ecology and the latest progress in domestic discipline construction. The book takes a macro perspective, layer by layer, placing specific ecological phenomena and processes in a broader ecological context to reflect the unique vision and perspective of ecological problem-solving. Starting from the relationship between plants and the environment, with ecological adaptation and coevolution as the main thread, the book analyzes the functional roles of plants in ecosystems and their ecological phenomena at different levels—communities, populations, and individuals—integrating fundamental theories with practical applications. The book strives to reflect the current trends in ecological development, introducing cutting-edge fields and hot issues such as ecosystem services, metapopulations, component theory, biological invasions, and genetically modified plants in relevant chapters. Each chapter includes discussion questions and recommended readings to facilitate student review, broaden their knowledge, and enhance their learning ability and comprehensive qualities. The book is primarily intended for ecology, botany, environmental science, and natural geography students and teachers in higher education institutions, as well as for students and teachers in normal universities and agricultural and forestry colleges for reference.
