The teaching philosophy followed by this book—Task-based learning
"College English for Proficiency" is based on the "task-based learning" concept, viewing students as individuals who use language to complete tasks rather than mere learners. In this series, students engage in learning by taking on specific roles. Each unit focuses on a particular topic, training students' language communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation.
1. Each unit's TASK serves as the overall guide for the course, embodying the essence of the lesson. For example, in the unit "Learning to Make Phone Calls" from "College English for Proficiency I," students learn the following:
We assume Mr. Lin is an employee of ABC Company and frequently communicates with clients over the phone for business purposes. To perform his job effectively, Mr. Lin needs to understand phone etiquette, master the language for making calls, learn to communicate appropriately with others in both personal and business contexts, and grasp the method of leaving phone messages. Under this overarching task, Mr. Lin proceeds step by step to complete the following:
2. Listening content for "Learning to Make Phone Calls": Training course on phone etiquette by ABC Company.
3. Speaking content for "Learning to Make Phone Calls":
- Situational Dialogue 1: Mr. Lin has a phone conversation with a client from ABC Company.
- Situational Dialogue 2: Mr. Lin invites a friend to the movies over the phone.
4. Reading content for "Learning to Make Phone Calls": An article on Japanese phone etiquette.
5. Writing content for "Learning to Make Phone Calls": Leaving a phone message for a colleague.
6. Translation content for "Learning to Make Phone Calls": Translating training notes into Chinese.
In line with the spirit of the Ministry of Education's "Teaching Requirements for College English Courses (Trial)" in 2004, this series of elective college English textbooks for proficiency was co-developed by a collaboration of key universities nationwide. "College English for Proficiency" is based on the "task-based learning" concept, emphasizing pragmatic behavior principles. Each unit focuses on a specific topic, training students' language communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. Each book is accompanied by an audio CD.
"College English for Proficiency—I Walk into Social Life" covers vivid and practical social topics such as self-introductions, interviews, interpersonal interactions and communication, self-expression, and handling emergencies, with a total of 15 units. This book is suitable as a textbook for lower-level elective courses in English for non-English majors at undergraduate universities and can also be used for self-study.
