What are the reasons for a prolonged period with reduced menstrual flow?

Patient's question:

In the past two months, my menstrual period has been lighter and longer than before. Originally, it lasted for 4 days, but now it's around 10 days, and sometimes it still drips.

Doctor's answer:

Menstrual volume is insufficient, with both deficiency and excess patterns. In deficiency cases, it is primarily due to congenital kidney qi deficiency or excessive sexual activity and childbirth that damages the kidneys. Insufficient kidney qi leads to inadequate essence and blood, resulting in depleted (Chong and Ren meridians) and an empty blood sea, causing reduced menstrual flow. There are also cases where blood and qi sources are insufficient or excessive blood loss from severe illness leads to an empty blood sea, causing insufficient menstrual flow.
In excess cases, it may be due to blood stasis, phlegm-dampness, or external pathogens obstructing the uterine and ligamentous channels, impairing blood flow and reducing menstrual volume. You can try oral Tiao Jing Wan (Regulating Menstruation Pills), 10 pills each time, three times daily, or Yi Mu Wan (Motherwort Pills), 1 pill each time, two times daily.
For those with frequent constipation, drinking 1-2 cups of cool water 20 minutes before breakfast can stimulate the digestive tract and induce the urge to defecate. Additionally, maintain a regular diet.
