In the 1940s, he attended Hangzhou National Art College and became a disciple of the renowned Chinese painting master Pan Tianshou. He specialized in freehand flower-and-bird painting and also practiced finger painting, receiving great affection from the professors at the college. In December 1947, after graduating, he held the exhibition "Liu Bojun, a Young Chinese Painter, Disciple of Pan Tianshou." In the spring of 1948, he participated in the "Modern Famous Figures' Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition" organized by Nanjing's Xinmin Evening News.
Since the spring of 1955, when Liu Bojun returned to his hometown, the Daba Mountains, after serving in the Korean War, he spent over forty years traveling across the vast Daba Mountains. In the impoverished and harsh conditions, he devoted himself to the study of poetry, calligraphy, painting, and art. He widely absorbed the techniques of folk painting and Western modern abstract and expressive styles, integrating and innovating boldly, gradually forming his unique artistic style. In 1993, the China Artists Association, the magazine "Yan Huang Chunqiu," and the Daxian Regional Association for Cultural Exchange jointly held the "Liu Bojun Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition" at the National Art Museum of China. That same October, he was invited to the Zhongnanhai to participate in the "National Calligraphy and Painting Meeting Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Mao Zedong's Birth," and his finger paintings "Morning Glow" and "Autumn Charm" were collected by Zhongnanhai.
