Features: The role and evolution of the scholar-official in Chinese history is a highly complex phenomenon, not fully explainable by any single viewpoint. However, it is undeniable that the transmission and innovation of culture and thought have always been the central tasks of the scholar-official. From the perspective of cultural and intellectual history, this book attempts to observe and present the spiritual characteristics of the scholar-official as a social class. Naturally, this can only be a macro historical overview. But if such an overview is not based on micro-studies, it risks becoming superficial and arbitrary. Therefore, this book does not adopt a comprehensive historical approach but instead consists of a series of specialized historical studies. I have selected several central themes related to the development of the "scholar-official" in each historical period and then conducted a comparative, specific, and in-depth analysis of each theme. I hope to demonstrate the unique position of the "scholar-official" in Chinese cultural history through this focused research method.
China's culture forms a unique system, a historical fact widely acknowledged by scholars both in China and abroad today. Against the backdrop of Western culture, the uniqueness of this cultural system is even more evident. However, the scope of culture is virtually boundless; it is difficult to succinctly capture the characteristics of Chinese culture in a few words. In recent decades, there have been countless writings discussing the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western cultures, truly falling into the chaotic state described by Mozi as "one person, one definition; ten people, ten definitions." However, if we go beyond the level of language, it is not difficult to discover that while the differences among various viewpoints may seem significant, they are not necessarily mutually incompatible. Compared to Western culture, Chinese culture exhibits its unique form in almost every aspect. Therefore, observers, no matter the angle from which they view it, can capture a facet of this uniqueness. This is the root cause of the diverse opinions. As long as observers do not insist on generalizing from a partial perspective, the more viewpoints there are, the more Chinese culture's characteristics can be highlighted.
This book compiles twelve specialized historical studies, with the primary focus on the "scholar-official." The "scholar-official" in Chinese history is roughly equivalent to what is now called "intellectuals," though the two are not entirely the same. To respect historical facts, the term "scholar-official" is retained here. These studies are based primarily on the perspectives of cultural and intellectual history, hence the title of the book. The book does not adopt a comprehensive historical approach but instead consists of a series of specialized historical studies. The author has selected several central themes related to the development of the "scholar-official" in each historical period and conducted a comparative, specific, and in-depth analysis of each theme, hoping to demonstrate the unique position of the "scholar-official" in Chinese cultural history through this focused research method.
