Can ovarian cysts and follicles be seen on a color Doppler ultrasound?

Patient's question:

Hello doctor, what exactly can be seen in a color Doppler ultrasound of an ovarian cyst and a follicle? The doctor did a color Doppler ultrasound and said I have a physiological small follicle, but what's the difference between it and a cyst? Can MRI differentiate between them?

Doctor's answer:

It has been found that there are cystic diseases. Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between physiological ovarian cysts and pathological ovarian cysts. Generally, pathological ovarian cysts can be seen on ultrasound as having uneven echoes and complex echo patterns, but color Doppler ultrasound cannot clearly differentiate them. Sometimes, periodic follow-up examinations are required. The cyst may be 4-5 cm before menstruation, but after a period of time, it may shrink or even disappear, which is a physiological cyst. If it does not disappear, it is a pathological ovarian cyst, and surgical removal is necessary for treatment.
