Features: The term "newly compiled" has two meanings: first, the selection of words and entries is primarily based on the newly compiled textbooks; second, the establishment of definitions and interpretations must align with the development of word meanings, paying attention to the unity of sound, form, and meaning. This requires a focus on scientific rigor. Practicality is oriented towards the actual needs of middle school students, presenting content in an accessible and clear manner, enabling students to understand and apply them, and addressing practical issues in reading simple classical Chinese texts. We primarily embody the above spirit through the following five aspects:
First, in the selection of words and entries, the primary basis is the pre-Qin and Han prose included in textbooks and readers, as well as the classical-style prose of famous writers from the Tang and Song dynasties and later periods. Additionally, selected poems, ci poems, qu poems, fu, ancient vernacular included in textbooks, and classical Chinese terms from Ming and Qing Dynasty novels are also included to some extent.
Second, the establishment of definitions must align with the development of ancient Chinese word meanings, requiring scientific analysis to clarify the original meaning and various extended meanings of characters, and to arrange definitions historically.
Third, word classes are annotated. We categorize and label the word classes of each definition of single characters, striving for consistency between interpretations, usage examples, and word class definitions.
Fourth, proper handling of homophones and archaic characters is ensured.
Fifth, to better help readers grasp the evolution of the forms of ancient and modern Chinese characters—such as variations between complex, simplified, and variant characters—understand subtle differences between synonymous and near-synonymous words, and recognize differences between ancient and modern meanings—brief explanations and guidance on differentiation are provided.
