Features: Cai Dongfan's "Popular Historical Romances of China" spans from the Qin and Han dynasties to the Republic of China, comprising over a thousand chapters and more than five million words, covering nearly 2,200 years of history. Based on reliable historical records with supplementary anecdotes, the work is meticulously researched, presents balanced perspectives, and is rich in content, well-structured, and written in elegant language. It includes self-reviews and annotations, blending intellectual depth with readability, truly a classic in popular historical literature. Since its publication, the series has been widely acclaimed and beloved. In the mid-1930s, Mao Zedong once sent a telegraph to Li Keqiang to purchase two copies of this book to help educate officials in Yan'an about Chinese history. It was often placed beside the bed in his bedroom. The renowned historian Zai Degeng believed that while the book may have some shortcomings as a historical source, its content is sufficiently rich and its narrative systematic. The famous novelist Erhuo River thought that the literary quality of the book is merely average, but it serves as an entry point to understanding national history, and no other work compares to it. Chinese history, since the Xia Dynasty under Yu the Great, has passed through the Qing Dynasty, experiencing numerous revolutions and changes in ruling dynasties, but it has always remained within the framework of an emperor. Unfortunately, while some founding emperors were wise and just, most of their descendants became ignorant, tyrannical, and oppressive to the people. The people, suffering unbearable hardship, resorted to rebellion, leading to the rise and fall of dynasties throughout history. No feast lasts forever, and no imperial dynasty has ever lasted forever. In the past century, both Chinese and foreign scholars have studied politics, all agreeing that the imperial system was flawed. To achieve lasting peace, the only solution was to overthrow the monarchy and establish a system that served the people. Thus, Sun Yat-sen, Li Yuanhong, and Yuan Shikai emerged to lead the charge, seizing back the Qing Dynasty's 267-year reign and abolishing the 4,600-year-old imperial system in one fell swoop. The 400 million compatriots believed that the Republic had begun, a new era that would dazzle the past and present, bringing a bright, clean future and peace for all. But who knew that in the second year of the Republic, everyone was holding meetings, forming their own parties, and attacking each other, already forgetting the meaning of "republic." By the tenth year of the Republic, the sky had turned grey, and many strange events had unfolded, stirring my pen to write more. Yet, as my thoughts were not yet complete, I continued writing.
