Features: Not long after the outbreak of World War I, young Lieutenant Adrian had not yet participated in combat when he suffered the misfortune of having half his face disfigured and losing his ability to speak. He was admitted to the officer's ward and began a five-year-long life of isolation. Countless surgeries, countless blows— his two roommates supporting each other, Adrian bravely walked out of the hospital with a mumbled pronunciation. After discharge, he went to find the stranger he had shared a night of warmth with before enlisting. It was this beautiful memory that sustained him through those painful years. Unbeknownst to him, when he finally found the woman after enduring countless hardships, she had already forgotten him and rejected his affections. Perhaps the trials in the officer's ward made Adrian more able to face the world with equanimity and rediscover his own happiness. The novel depicts the tragic experiences of wounded officers, the inhuman suffering they endured physically and mentally, exposing the cruelty and indifference of war, and praising the officers' love for their homeland and family, as well as their optimistic attitude toward life.
