Features: This book is one of the research achievements of the reform of the basic curriculum system in higher art education, approved by the Sichuan Provincial Department of Education. The writing of this book is undertaken by Chen Hong and Xiang Xinyuan, who jointly drafted the outline and content. Xiang Xinyuan wrote the preface, the chapter, some illustrations analysis, and the works review in the creative appreciation section (color illustrations in the book). Chen Hong wrote Chapters 2, 3, 4, and some illustrations analysis, and finally, the two discussed and compiled the manuscript. The guiding philosophy of this research project is to accurately interpret the basic theories of art using the perspectives of historical materialism and dialectical materialism, to strengthen students' fundamental art education, and to correct the tendency of art majors to prioritize technical skills over theory. In the theoretical elaborations and works analysis, it emphasizes the interpretation of common laws among Eastern and Western art as well as various painting genres such as sketching, color, oil painting, Chinese painting, printmaking, and sculpture. At the same time, it strives to ensure the theoretical relevance, practicality, and effectiveness of the book. The basic curriculum in higher art education includes the history of Chinese and foreign art, art theory, sketching and color theory, as well as the foundation of Chinese painting, design basics, and creative practice. The authors chose the course of composition and creation as a breakthrough point for teaching reform, with the intention of emphasizing the cultivation of students' innovative abilities and creative spirit, while also integrating the knowledge and skills of the composition and creation course with those of art disciplines, natural sciences, social sciences, and other art forms. This aligns with the current direction of teaching reform, which focuses on "deepening the foundation, broadening knowledge, and enhancing the cultivation of comprehensive qualities."
