Features: This book is written as an introductory textbook for students majoring in Gemology and Materials Technology in higher education institutions. To enable students and readers to better master the techniques and methods of jewelry appraisal, we have strived to meet the following requirements during the collection of materials and writing of the manuscript:
① Systematic and Comprehensive. Although modern jewelry appraisal is a new direction in gemological research, it is also an important part of the field of gemology. Appraisal knowledge is intrinsically linked to gem resource development, jewelry processing technology, gem markets, and commerce. In many cases, the feasibility and accuracy of jewelry appraisal are based on the accumulation of knowledge in these disciplines. To effectively master the relevant techniques and methods, we aim to establish a systematic and comprehensive framework as much as possible and reflect the achievements of the contemporary field of jewelry appraisal.
② Chinese Characteristics. Although modern jewelry appraisal techniques originated in the United States, China also has a long history in jewelry appraisal. One of the industries related to jewelry appraisal, such as pawnbroking, originated in China. Chinese jade culture is a gem of Eastern culture in the world's cultural history. We have no reason to blindly follow suit, so while emphasizing learning from others, we also expect innovation and the reflection of Chinese regional characteristics.
③ Applicability and Practicality. Although this book is a textbook and must adhere to the systematic and exemplary structure of textbooks, we also hope it serves as a useful reference book. Through reading and reflection, students and readers can gain a practical understanding of some methods, approaches, techniques, and skills in jewelry appraisal. Applying what they learn is the common goal we all strive to achieve.
