What causes ectopic pregnancy?

Patient's question:

Twice already, I really want a child, but why would this happen again? What causes ectopic pregnancy? I had a miscarriage once before. Could my ectopic pregnancy be triggered by that previous miscarriage? Can ectopic pregnancy be treated?

Doctor's answer:

Because ectopic pregnancy mostly occurs in the fallopian tubes, the causes of ectopic pregnancy are primarily due to chronic tubal inflammation. Tubal inflammation is generally related to induced abortion and may also be associated with secondary infections from unsafe sexual practices. If ectopic pregnancy occurs again, due to its abnormal causes, most cases require early termination of pregnancy. If the fallopian tube is surgically removed, pregnancy can only be achieved through assisted reproductive technologies. However, if the fallopian tube is preserved, tubal irrigation can be used to assess its patency and determine the optimal timing for intercourse to enhance the chances of pregnancy.
