Features: New University German is compiled based on the Teaching Syllabus for University German (Second Edition). This textbook is designed for undergraduate students in science, engineering, liberal arts, management, and other disciplines who are beginners in German, as well as for use as a foundational textbook for German language training. With the higher requirements for university foreign language teaching in the new century, this textbook emphasizes the cultivation of students' practical language application skills, particularly communicative competence, based on the provisions and quantitative indicators of the new syllabus. New University German consists of four volumes, each with a student book and a teacher book. Main texts, listening comprehension, and unit vocabulary are accompanied by audio cassettes. Each volume contains ten units, each centered around a theme to provide training in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation, aiming to develop students' comprehensive language skills. Since the development of language skills is inseparable and mutually reinforcing, the use of language skills in real-life contexts also requires their integrated application. In comparison, Volume 1 and Volume 2 focus more on listening and speaking training and oral communicative activities, while covering basic grammar. Volumes 3 and 4 continue to strengthen listening and speaking training while gradually increasing reading volume to further enhance reading, writing, and written communicative skills.
Except for the phonetics section in Volume 1, each unit in this textbook consists of eight parts: introduction, main text, exercises, communicative intent, listening, reading, grammar summary, and unit vocabulary list. Volume 1 units are dedicated to phonetics, requiring approximately 12 hours to complete. The basic course has nine units, each requiring about 6 hours. The remaining time is allocated for review and exams. Adjustments can be made based on specific teaching needs. For ease of teaching, the following are the key features of Volume 1:
1. Under the principle of each unit being centered around a theme, the textbook selects the best language samples closely related to students' campus and social lives. The texts are fresh, diverse in, varied in style, practical, and rich in contemporary.
2. Dialogue form is a feature of the texts and exercises. To help students move beyond rote memorization and improve language application skills in a relaxed and enjoyable manner, various communicative exercises are designed, which are context-based, easy to practice, and short in length, allowing students to naturally absorb and apply the learned language knowledge through repeated practice in specific contexts. Learn through communication, and communicate through learning, thereby improving learning efficiency.
3. Each unit focuses on training one communicative intent, aiming to help students master common expressions in certain communicative contexts.
4. Grammar is naturally integrated into each theme and serves each theme. Grammar exercises emphasize fun, practicality, and diversity. Grammar introductions are tabularized, concise, and easy to find, providing guidance for students' self-study.
5. The illustrations and photographs in each unit serve pedagogical purposes, facilitating the conduct of exercises.
6. Emphasis on cross-cultural communication and national studies injects vitality and dynamism into the learning of each unit. Students gain a deeper understanding of foreign cultures through German language learning, which helps cultivate their cross-cultural communication skills.
7. To meet the needs of the information age, each unit provides relevant websites related to the theme, allowing students to access more information, broaden their perspectives, and integrate traditional language teaching with modern multimedia methods.
