Does miscarriage cause ovarian cysts?

Patient's question:

I am 26 years old, married for a year, and have not been able to conceive. After a thorough examination at the hospital, I was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst. I am very worried that this is the reason why I have not been able to conceive. Before getting married, I had a miscarriage. Could you please tell me if a miscarriage can lead to an ovarian cyst?

Doctor's answer:

Miscarriage generally does not lead to the recurrence of ovarian cysts. After a miscarriage, you may experience physiological corpus luteum cysts, but these cysts usually disappear after the onset of menstruation. Therefore, miscarriage before marriage does not cause the recurrence of cysts now. The cysts that have reappeared now should be due to endocrine imbalance and abnormal hormone secretion. Treatment options can be chosen based on the size of the cysts. If the cyst is larger than 5 centimeters, surgery may be required to resolve it.
