Features: It embodies Chinese characteristics in postgraduate education and degree systems, which were gradually established after the reform and opening-up. As an integral part of this system, the construction of public degree courses for humanities and social science postgraduates, including the reading of original works of Marxism, is essential. Due to the inherent difficulty of these public theoretical courses (requiring high unity of scientificity and ideology) and their complexity as public degree courses for postgraduates (requiring a good balance between professional specificity and content commonality), they have long lacked standardized and stable teaching materials. It has become increasingly urgent to standardize and scientize such courses, and the Research Center for Marxist Theory at Nanjing University, as the supervisory unit for these courses, has long aspired to achieve this. Under the strong advocacy and promotion of the late Director Sun Boxie, with the strong support and sponsorship of the Graduate School of Nanjing University and the publishing house, we have finally taken a solid step forward. As a teaching material specifically designed for humanities postgraduates studying the original works of Marxism, it cannot be as freely exploratory in theory as academic monographs but must adopt viewpoints and arguments recognized by the academic community. At the same time, it cannot be as limited as ordinary textbooks, merely explaining and deriving viewpoints, but must include deeper academic discussions and debates. How to strike this balance is not entirely clear to us, and we can only mainly rely on teaching practice and outcomes to judge. While adhering to the correct theoretical guidance, how to make students interested, inspired, and truly convinced remains our unwavering goal. We still have a long way to go, but we are willing to continue striving for this.
