Features: The book "Practical Interpreting" is written with three objectives in mind:
1. To help students break through in three aspects: note-taking, Chinese-to-English translation, and conveying the speaker's intended message, achieving a leap in their interpreting skills.
2. To transform a skill that many have only heard of but few possess into a resource that everyone can learn and use, contributing to the comprehensive improvement of English-Chinese/Chinese-English interpreting skills.
3. To introduce basic knowledge required for those aspiring to pursue a career in interpreting, combining practical Chinese contexts, and providing a reference path for those who wish to cultivate and develop themselves into professional interpreters.
Structure of the Textbook "Practical Interpreting" consists of four parts:
1. The textbook portion includes 16 theoretical lessons. Lessons 1 to 10 explain the theory and skills of interpreting, while Lessons 11 to 16 introduce basic knowledge for developing an interpreting career, serving as a reference. The second half of the book comprises 36 simulated practical exercises. English-to-Chinese and Chinese-to-English exercises are evenly distributed. Each unit is designed for 2-4 hours of classroom practice and 1 hour of pre-class preparation and review. The exercise units are composed of the following main contents:
1) Supporting Materials: Approximately 1,000 words, equivalent to the content interpreters must read and prepare before accepting an interpreting task. Some supporting materials fully cover the content and difficulties of relevant interpreting tasks, while others provide only background knowledge. Some come with audio materials for pre-class preparation or review. All materials are accompanied by annotations on difficult points, explaining key words and phrases.
2) Original Speech, Reference Notes, and Reference Translations: Corresponding to the audio, listed in 8 segments...
This book compiles the author's years of practical experience and is specifically written for senior English majors and learners aspiring to pursue an interpreting career. It covers a wide range of industries and is comprehensive and practical. The book emphasizes practical techniques, particularly the importance of note-taking, combining skills such as "brain splitting" and "sentence segmentation" in simultaneous interpreting. From a practical perspective, it helps you handle on-site interpreting challenges with ease, eliminating awkward silences.
Teaching Reference: For each lesson in the textbook, targeted reference lesson plans, explanations of difficult points, and note analysis are provided. When used alongside the textbook, these resources help teachers and self-learners better understand and master the content, offering excellent teaching support.
