Features: The China-Japan Criminal Law Academic Symposium is an important academic exchange activity held every two years alternately in China and Japan since 1988. It has successfully hosted nine meetings to date and has had a broad and positive impact on the criminal law communities in both China and Japan. The 3rd Symposium in the 21st Century (the 9th overall) was originally scheduled for May 2003 in Japan, following the 2nd Symposium in the 21st Century (the 8th overall), which was held in October 2002. However, due to the outbreak of the "SARS" epidemic, the meeting was postponed to May 2004. Through meticulous planning and thorough preparation by the Japan-China Criminal Law Research Society, President Professor Nishihara Haruo, and Vice President Professor Ohya Minoru, among other scholars, the 3rd Symposium in the 21st Century (the 9th overall) was successfully held from May 7 to 10, 2004, at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan.
The symposium focused on the theme of "Economic Crimes." First, five scholars from both China and Japan delivered academic presentations on five aspects: "Corporate Crime," "General Issues of Property Crime," "Corporate Property Crimes," "Securities Crimes," and "Criminal Law Protection of Consumer Rights." Then, presenters from the same topic in China and Japan engaged in mutual Q&A sessions on each other's presentations. Finally, other participants asked questions of the presenters. The discussions were lively, in-depth, and thorough, achieving very satisfactory results.
To ensure the outcomes of the symposium could have a broader impact and further promote deeper and broader exchanges and cooperation between China and Japan in the field of criminal law, as well as research on economic crimes, both sides compiled the relevant results of the meeting into books in their respective languages, as agreed upon previously, for publication and distribution. Comparative Studies on Economic Crimes in China and Japan is a compilation of academic presentations by China and Japan scholars at the 21st Century Criminal Law Academic Symposium. The book explores five important issues in economic crimes—both micro and macro—currently with high incidence rates and significant harm, conducting in-depth discussions. For each issue, scholars from both China and Japan conduct research, facilitating comparative and reference purposes. Therefore, we believe that the publication of this book will contribute to the enrichment and deepening of research on economic crimes in China.
We are delighted to see that academic cooperation and exchange in the field of criminal law between China and Japan are flourishing at an unprecedented pace and continuously deepening. This achievement undoubtedly owes much to the active guidance and promotion of the older generation of criminal law scholars in both countries, as well as the enthusiastic participation and support of the younger generation. We look forward to and believe that, with the continued efforts of criminal law scholars from both China and Japan, cooperation and exchange in the field of criminal law will yield even more fruitful results!
