Features: In 1998, American writer Cormac McCarthy published the final installment of The Border Trilogy, Cities of the Plain, ending a decade of dedicated writing. He completed this western literary masterpiece, which includes Fargo and The Crossing, and presented it to the eagerly awaited reading public. It was warmly received by North American readers and became a literary sensation at the time. Shortly after, the Hollywood film Fargo, based on the first part of The Trilogy, was released as a spectacular box office hit across 1,800 theaters in the United States on Christmas Day in 2000, taking this literary event to new heights. At that time, I was in Provo, Utah, and had the chance to experience this event firsthand. I was invited by Professor Shang Yuming, who was also teaching at Brigham Young University in the city, to watch the film, which showcased the life of cowboys on the U.S.-Mexico border and the western atmosphere. Professor Shang Yuming was one of the translators of Fargo. At his suggestion, we began to contemplate translating the subsequent novels The Crossing and Cities of the Plain together. The release and success of the film gave us tremendous encouragement and motivation, leading us to start translating the last two parts of The Trilogy the following year with the support of Shanghai Translation Publishing House. Cities of the Plain is the final installment of the famous "Border Trilogy" by American writer Cormac McCarthy. In the first two novels, Fargo and The Crossing, the protagonists John Grady and Billy will once again face the nostalgic past and the uncertain future. The novel finds its two protagonists each finding their belonging through a tragic love story. The grand scenes and historical-style language allow readers to once again appreciate the charm of this classic literary writer.
