Patient's question:
My older cousin just finished nursing her child and has now completed her postpartum period. When she was discharged after giving birth, she was told to have a postpartum check-up after her confinement. Today, she went for a thorough examination and had a vaginal ultrasound. It was said that there is pelvic effusion. How is pelvic effusion caused?Doctor's answer:
Pelvic effusion is caused by bacteria infiltrating the cervix mucosa at the posterior of the vagina, spreading to the endometrium, fallopian tube mucosa, and eventually reaching the ovaries and abdominal cavity, leading to inflammatory effusion in the abdominal cavity. The exception is when an ovum is released and the ovary wall breaks, allowing it to enter the abdominal cavity without timely resolution, which results in physiological effusion. This type of effusion is usually small in amount and does not cause clinical symptoms, so medication treatment is not necessary.
