The Book of Songs states, "The Great Plan of Nine Categories, the moral order is properly arranged." It means there are multiple methods. The Li Sao says, "I have nurtured orchids in nine fields and planted asparagus in hundreds of acres," and other references to the meaning of "nine." It signifies that the author has numerous students and shows great kindness to future learners. So many references to the number "nine" in folk culture have formed the proverb, "Ninety-nine out of ninety-nine." These all say that "nine" is the greatest, most extensive, auspicious, and lucky number.
There are 99 major folk remedies, such as "One herb, Duheng, relieves headaches as if cutting," accompanied by three related practical prescriptions, such as "Famous physician Pu Zhou treats with safflower wine." The major entries are 99, and the minor entries are also 99, mostly "folk remedies," with some essentially "standard remedies." The content is closely interconnected, not only corresponding in size but also allowing for mutual reference. It can be used by general readers to "search for the horse according to the picture" and choose remedies based on diseases, as well as by clinical practitioners as a reference when prescribing.
