Features: Linguistics, as a social science, has been one of the fastest-developing and most transformative disciplines abroad since the 1950s. Over the past nearly 50 years, Western countries have seen numerous new theories and significant achievements in linguistics, whose influence has spread across psychology, sociology, education, anthropology, literary studies, archaeology, communication technology, machine translation, and other disciplines. As a result, universities have successively established linguistics departments, cultivating specialized linguistics professionals. In China, however, due to various reasons, the significance of this discipline was not fully recognized by the linguistic community until after the 10-year turmoil. Consequently, English departments in domestic universities have gradually made linguistics a compulsory course for English undergraduates. The Linguistics Textbook, edited by Hu Zhuanglin, Liu Runqing, and others (1988), became a standard text for English majors in higher education institutions.
