Does primary dysmenorrhea affect pregnancy?

Patient's question:

I recently had a thorough check-up at the hospital and found out that I have primary dysmenorrhea. I want to know if primary dysmenorrhea interferes with getting pregnant?

Doctor's answer:

Primary dysmenorrhea can also affect fertility, but the risk of secondary infertility is much lower compared to secondary dysmenorrhea. The reasons for infertility caused by primary dysmenorrhea are related to the reasons for its recurrence. Uterine abnormalities and cervical canal deformities leading to poor menstrual blood flow can easily cause infertility. Additionally, long-term interference from dysmenorrhea can cause the endometrium to peel off in sheet-like fragments, damaging the endometrium and leading to infertility. Therefore, regardless of the type of dysmenorrhea, active treatment is necessary to prevent the condition from worsening.
