In 1535, French explorer Cartier arrived here and asked the Native Americans for the name of the place. The local chief replied, "Canada" (Kanada), which originally referred to a nearby village. However, Cartier mistakenly believed it referred to the entire region, and from then on, the place was called Canada. Another theory suggests that in 1500, Portuguese explorer Cortereal arrived and, seeing the desolate landscape, exclaimed "Canada!" meaning "There is nothing here," thus giving it its name.
