Features: Without a doubt, musical theatre is one of the most important and rapidly developing cultural achievements of the 20th century. After a full century of evolution and development, musical theatre has gradually matured and has now become the most vibrant and prosperous entertainment and cultural industry. In our country, musical theatre is still in the exploratory and pioneering stage. Our understanding and knowledge of Western musical theatre are still superficial. Although some related books and reference materials have been published, we rarely see live-stage recordings (VCD or DVD). As for the soul of musical theatre—music—our publications in this area are almost non-existent. In light of this, we have compiled this Selection of Famous Songs from Western Musicals, carefully choosing 40 classic songs from 27 iconic musicals and translating them into Chinese. Additionally, we have provided brief textual introductions for each musical, including the creators, the creative process, the plot, and the awards received. This Selection serves as both a reference for musical theatre professionals and a resource for singers who wish to perform the original lyrics or the Chinese translations. It also greatly aids general music enthusiasts in understanding and appreciating musical theatre.
