Is a natural miscarriage followed by a D&C necessary?

Patient's question:

I used to have regular periods, but recently I haven't had a period for over 40 days. The day before yesterday, I suddenly had vaginal bleeding again, accompanied by abdominal pain. After a thorough examination, it was found that I had a natural miscarriage. In this case, do I need a D&C (dilation and curettage)? And do I need to take any oral medications?

Doctor's answer:

After medication abortion, it is recommended to check an instant intrauterine color ultrasound to see how clean the miscarriage is. If the miscarriage is clean, there is no need for a D&C. If there is residual placental tissue, a D&C is necessary. After miscarriage, oral hemostatic and anti-inflammatory drugs should be taken to help expel blood clots from the uterine cavity. At the same time, antibiotics should be taken orally to prevent secondary inflammation. Avoid spicy and overly stimulating foods. The diet should be light and bland.
