The role of wine, apart from adding flavor to daily life, is also to heal. The Shuowen Jiezi states: "The nature of medicine is such that it is enhanced by wine, hence the character for wine is composed with the character for medicine. Wine is used to treat diseases." This indicates that doctors absolutely cannot practice medicine without wine. Besides daily consumption, wine is also used as a medicinal treatment, making the relationship between wine and medicine far more significant than any other medicinal relationship. In the vast collection of traditional Chinese medical classics, no book is without mention of wine, and no medicine is complete without wine. Therefore, it is truly not an exaggeration to call wine a gem in the treasure trove of medicine. In traditional Chinese medical formulas, countless prescriptions combine wine with other herbs. By the late 20th century, the Comprehensive Dictionary of Traditional Chinese Medicine Formulas, edited by Peng Huairen, included over 1,000 formulas named after wine, and many more formulas where wine was the primary ingredient but not named as such. Additionally, numerous medical texts contain unnamed wine formulas that combine wine and herbs for healing. Thus, wine is not only a warm-hearted beverage but also an essential and indispensable medicinal agent in medicine. This book collects thousands of wine formulas, listing one to dozens of wine prescriptions for each disease or syndrome. The selected formulas adhere to the principles of simplicity, practicality, ease of operation, minimal side effects, and proven efficacy. Except for a very few with undeniable efficacy, formulas with overly complex compositions, difficult-to-master preparation methods, or certain toxicity are excluded. The methods include brewing wine with herbs, cooking wine, fermenting wine, or administering herbs with wine, as well as making wine pills with wine paste, among others. There are numerous methods, all easy for readers to grasp and suitable for patients to consume over extended periods.
