What is biochemical abortion?

Patient's question:

A friend told me that she had a biochemical abortion. I don't know what that is. Does anyone know what a biochemical abortion is?

Doctor's answer:

Biochemical pregnancy refers to a situation where pregnancy has occurred, but due to various reasons such as luteal phase deficiency or poor embryo development, the fertilized egg fails to enter the uterine cavity and results in a miscarriage before implantation. This can generally be diagnosed through blood tests to check progesterone and hCG levels. If the diagnosis is an early pregnancy loss, further detailed examinations are necessary to identify the underlying cause, such as routine cervical discharge tests, mycoplasma and chlamydia tests, six sex hormones, and five pre-natal tests. After diagnosis, active treatment should be initiated.
