The changes in their lives happened unusually suddenly. At that moment, they were living in a happy family, having everything they wanted. In an instant, their father was forced to leave—on a business trip, their mother said. But her face was pale, and the children understood it was bad news. They had to leave their comfortable home in London and move to a small house in the countryside. Now they were poor, their mother said. Though she tried to sound cheerful, her eyes were filled with sadness and worry. Roberta, Peter, and Phyllis were also worried about their father, but none of them could stay sad forever. A new life had begun, filled with new and exciting adventures. From their new home, there was a railway leading down the mountain, a dazzlingly bright railway heading to London; there was also a mountain tunnel with a dark, gaping mouth, where trains roared out from the darkness, like enormous beasts.
