"I—Jude—love you, we love each other too deeply, too selfishly; now we are punished." Young Jude Fawley lives in the lifeless village of Melchester, but his gaze often sweeps across the fields, toward the roofs and towers in the city of Christminster. He tells himself that one day he will give up his obscure life in Melchester to go to university there, become a clergyman, and become a great person. But for a poor child, it is not easy to take the path Jude chooses in life, and he will encounter many unexpected things. First, there is Arabella Don, a beautiful village girl who wants to marry. Then there is Hugh Briscoe, the one Jude loves.
Thomas Hardy was born on June 2, 1840, in a small village in the southwest of England, adjacent to the Great Downs of Dorset. The natural environment of this area later became the main setting for Hardy's works. His father was a stonemason but loved music. Both parents valued the cultural education of Thomas Hardy. In 1856, Hardy left school and became an apprentice to an architect. In 1862, he moved to London, where he worked as a drawing office assistant and studied languages at University College London, beginning his literary career. Hardy's literary career began with poetry, but after being unable to publish, he turned to writing novels. His first major novel, A Pair of Blue Eyes, was published in 1871. His breakthrough work was his fourth novel, The Return of the Native (1874). From then on, he abandoned his career as an architect and devoted himself to writing novels. Throughout his life, Hardy published nearly 20 major novels, the most famous of which include Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Jude the Obscure, The Return of the Native, and The Mayor of Casterbridge. He also published eight poetry collections, totaling 918 poems, in addition to many short stories and novels collectively titled The Wessex Tales, as well as the epic drama The King's Lear.
