Features: This book compiles and explains approximately 1,500 common ancient Chinese characters, serving as a reference tool for middle school teachers and students, as well as general readers learning classical Chinese. The explanations of character meanings include both literal and functional meanings. It covers more than 300 commonly used functional words in ancient Chinese. Each meaning of a character is accompanied by one or two textual examples. Most of the examples are selected from and traditional famous works. For examples from the textbooks, the original titles of the passages are used in the annotations, not the names of the original works. Examples include "The War of the States · Cao Wei's Discussion of War," "Marquis Sima's Battle of Red Cliff," and "Marquis Sima Qian's Banquet at Hongmen". The characters in this book are arranged in alphabetical order according to the Hanyu Pinyin phonetic system, and a stroke index is also provided.
